However, when Nadia, a gifted memory therapist, uncovers imperfections within her own recollections, she becomes entangled in a moral dilemma, challenging the technology she believes can salvage a society on the brink of chaos and division.
MEMO INC.'s world is marked by relatability and authenticity, with characters teetering on the precipice of a transformative technological revolution. It raises the central dramatic question: Does memory editing truly liberate individuals from their crippling traumas or herald the onset of a world devoid of truth? This is the core inquiry that MEMO INC. aims to explore.
Told through the innovative visual language of the Neymarc Brothers, MEMO INC. delves deep into the spectrum of human desire, despair, and drama, dissecting how our pasts invariably shape our futures, whether we consent or not.
At a time people can erase burdensome memories as easily as taking medication, an empathetic and dedicated mental health therapist, Nadia, fights to get to the root cause of her patient’s sufferings instead of just medicating their symptoms. Her philosophy is that to overcome previous traumas and grow past them, they must be confronted, not escaped from.
After she promises her daughter Lilly a trip abroad despite her family’s financial crisis, Nadia faces a life-changing decision when her workplace is acquired by Memo, Inc., a highly controversial memory-altering firm.
While hiding her new pregnancy from her husband Theo because of their financial woes, Nadia accepts the role and discovers Memo's ability to map, visualize and rewrite patient memories in a revolutionary way that could help people worldwide in a deep and long-lasting way.
While her steady income supports her family, the harrowing stories and images she encounters in treating her patients’ traumas begin to take a toll on her mental wellbeing. Her husband Theo urges her to cease tampering with the memories of troubled patients due to the residual impact on her psyche, but Nadia remains determined to help others.
Tasked with treating a troubled NYPD Sergeant who was traumatized in the line of duty, her success is tainted by a leak exposing the consequences of manipulated memories, leading Nadia and the entire firm’s operations to be scrutinized by the public, the press and New York’s District Attorney, Rivers.
As Nadia and Theo’s relationship unravels, the government investigation into the power and reach of memory-altering technology intensifies, and the press exposes the dark side of this emerging tech. NY District Attorney Rivers uncovers lies and contradictions that cast doubt on Memo Inc.'s inner workings and shakes Nadia's confidence in her own memories.
While being dragged through a public trial that will determine the legality and fate of memory-altering technology, Nadia questions her sanity and eventually discovers her own dark secret— a memory she’s hidden from herself: responsibility for her daughter's death.
Overwhelmed by crippling guilt, and amidst a city torn apart by violent protests, Nadia decides to erase all her most precious memories of Lilly, including those of her husband, Theo, in a desperate attempt to escape her haunting past and start anew.
"Memo, Inc." is a gripping tale of morality, sacrifice, and the profound impact of memory manipulation on personal, family and societal levels.
MEMO INC. unfolds in the near-future New York of 2035, where humanity grapples with ongoing climate crises, a widening wealth gap, and unequal access to healthcare. Conflict flares in numerous developing nations. In this tumultuous backdrop, there is a growing demand for people to liberate themselves from past traumas by rewriting their memories, made possible by Memo Inc.
Memo Inc. is a groundbreaking tech company that has developed software capable of rewriting patients' memories. Using a small sensor placed on a patient's temple, linked to proprietary software, memory therapists can map, navigate, and edit any of a patient's experiences. While the technology is impressive, the world of Memo Inc. retains a relatable and grounded ambiance, underscoring the sense that society teeters on the brink of a monumental technological transformation.
Initially situated in a picturesque corner of New York, Memo Inc. entices affluent clients seeking to reshape their pasts discreetly. However, as our narrative progresses, the surging demand for and reduced cost of memory-editing technology propels Memo Inc. to expand to New York City and other U.S. cities.
Memo Inc. will even extend its reach internationally. As the technology becomes more commercialized through advertising campaigns and celebrity endorsements, the world polarizes around its unregulated use, bringing out both the best and worst in our characters.
Nadia is a compassionate and talented therapist who desires nothing more than to provide a better life for her six-year-old daughter, Lilly. Her life is turned upside down when a memory-altering firm acquires the therapy practice she works at and promises to revolutionize the way patients' traumas are treated. Despite her skepticism and the firm’s controversial reputation, Nadia accepts the job to be able to afford the Africa trip she promised her daughter for her birthday and is trained in a unique form of therapy: memory editing.
Nadia’s profound understanding of human behavior and psychology eventually make her a sought-after memory therapist at Memo Inc., where she treats increasingly troubled patients, including her mother. When a federal investigation is launched against the firm, Nadia unravels inconsistencies in her own recollections with dramatic consequences. Confused, she finally discovers she has been masking a terrible truth from herself: her daughter’s death and the traumatic responsibility she holds in it. Nadia will be faced with a critical choice: to confront the truth of her past trauma and stay with her husband Theo, or pursue a blissfully ignorant life free from pain, albeit isolated from reality and void of the people she loves most. In the end, burdened with profound pain and irreparable guilt, Nadia weaves a complex web of fabricated memories—a true masterpiece that threatens her family, her sense of identity, and, worse, her sanity.
Theo is Nadia’s loyal and loving life-long partner. In his selfless commitment to preserving their marriage, Theo accepts to become the keeper of a painful secret and shields Nadia from the reality of their daughter's death, which leaves him alone in grieving the loss of his only child.
As he starts understanding the repercussions of memory manipulation and its impact on Nadia’s sense of identity, he adopts an anti-memo stance that strains their already fragile relationship. Despite his love for her, Theo struggles with the extent of Nadia's fabricated world and battles to maintain his mental wellbeing and protect their relationship. Ultimately, in an act of loyalty, he refuses to perpetuate Nadia's lies and for her own sake, propels the dismantling of her fictional world, at the risk of losing the only loved one he has left.
New York’s District Attorney, John Rivers, embarks on a journey following his brother's unexpected suicide, which he suspects stems from a rare dissociative identity disorder. Convinced that his brother was a client of Memo Inc., Rivers sacrifices his political aspirations and his reputation as New York's promising District Attorney to uncover the truth behind Memo Inc’s operations. When a leaked video of Sergeant Wilson's altered memory captures the public’s attention, he is compelled to shoulder the responsibility of preventing Memo Inc. from inflicting further harm on unsuspecting minds and launches a full-fledged investigation into the firm and its technology with the goal to ban the technology all together.
Through his investigation, he discovers that one of the best therapists at Memo harbors deep secrets of her own. Understanding that Nadia is regularly re-writing her own memories to shield herself from the trauma of her daughter’s death, River sees an opportunity to showcase the consequences of Memo Inc.'s lies in a courtroom and decides to put her on the witness stand. Ultimately, he obtains Memo's client list, only to discover his own name is on it.
Sergeant Wilson is an honest, by-the-book, highly principled NYPD officer in the elite Emergency Service Unit (NYPD ESU) whose life takes a drastic turn when, in the line of duty, while intervening in a school shooting, he accidentally shoots and kills an innocent teacher in a classroom full of kids. Plagued by profound guilt and forced by the Police Department to undergo mandated therapy and keep the incident quiet, Sergeant Wilson falls into a deep depression and displays symptoms of PTSD, which none of the Memo Inc. staff seem to be able to cure him from— until Nadia is brought in on the case.
As Wilson’s memo-therapist, she promises to alleviate his burdens and does a deep-dive into his childhood memories to uncover the root causes of his pain. Realizing that Wilson can only find absolution by confronting and publicly accepting responsibility for his actions, Nadia crafts a fictional memory of him confessing. However, when Wilson's original memory is leaked, his manufactured memos crack putting a tremendous amount of pressure on his mind. His identity splits and he spirals into a disturbed emotional state. His identity disorder leads him to seek retaliation on Nadia and her family, which will alter Nadia’s life forever.
The CEO of Memo Inc., Peter Romero, has endured humiliation and bullying throughout his life due to his peculiar, introverted nature and slight speech impediment. However, he recognized the potential of memory editing to reshape identity and improve lives, drawing inspiration from biographies of legendary disruptors like Elon Musk, Mark Zuckerberg and Steve Jobs. He employs memory manipulation to acquire the grit, charisma, and confidence necessary to launch Memo Inc. Yet, Peter grapples to retain control amidst the company's exponential growth, government investigations, and mounting public scrutiny, putting the durability of his self-constructed memories to the test.
A charming and soft-spoken Judge, Josh Hackens harbors some of the darkest and most horrifying memories ever edited by Nadia. He has committed heinous acts, including some perpetrated on his own son, yet suffers from debilitating regret after each crime. Memory editing will allow him to erase his misdeeds but perpetuate a vicious cycle preventing him from learning from his crimes. His immense wealth grants him access to Memo Inc.’s best memory-therapists but mounting pressures on the company will eventually hinder his ability to erase the memory of his crimes, exposing his true self.
Maxwell is an ambitious account manager at Memo Inc., who envisions the company as a transformative force for good. His mission is to propel memory alteration into the forefront of mental health treatments and help make it an intrinsic facet of New Yorkers' well-being, self care and therapeutic routines. He’s very found of Nadia and quickly notices her talent in weaving storylines and her profound understanding of trauma and human behavior. Noticing the extent and depth of Nadia’s rewrites, he sees in her a raw talent that could be the catalyst to expand Memo Inc. on a global scale.
Memo Inc’s onces have a distinguished modern design that conveys fortune-500-like success to visiting clients that wish to have their memories re-written.
